Joshua Tree National Park - California Joshua Tree National Park is located in south eastern California and includes 2 parts of deserts, the higher Mojave Desert and the lower Colorado Desert.

Joshua Tree NP from Space

The rock formations of Joshua Tree NP were formed around 100 million years ago, while magma started cooling down beneath the surface.

Especially in the higher and slightly cooler Mojave Desert we find the Joshua Tree which gives the name to the park. Joshua Trees are the dominant species in the park, but you also can find pines, California juniper, and oak.

The Colorado Desert covers the eastern part of the park with plants like the famous Ocotillo, desert saltbush, yucca and cholla cactus. In some areas the cactus densitiy is so high, that they appear as natural gardens.
